It’s so true isn’t it? It’s that time of year when the collective hopeful sigh is cast around the nation as we growers start to sow the seeds of what will hopefully be a bountiful harvest of flowers and vegetables. You cannot reap what you don’t sow, and who knows, maybe all that is sown will grow into great plants.
I started mine off before Christmas, when I sowed some lupin seeds, taken from last year’s flowers. They always do well, and are happy in a cool greenhouse over winter.
There’s Still Time
We were poorly in January and thus, not much else was done but February has seen me back into full swing. My lounge back window sill gets fantastic light all day, so that is where I start my seeds.
Mostly, you don’t need to start sowing your seeds until the end of February/beginning of March. There’s no rush; there’s still plenty of time. Don’t panic!
I do have a greenhouse but a good window sill is a great place to start your seeds on, as long as it has good light and warmth. Currently, I have sweet peas, lupins, erigeron, ranunculus, cosmos, rudbeckia and echinacea going great guns. I have also sown some echiums, and as a test, I have started some out in the greenhouse and some inside.

Outside
The outside is still messy, I’ve left a lot of the tidying and cutting back until the warmer weather, at least for a couple of weeks, as the bugs are still housed in much of the dead overgrowth. I made the mistake of taking off some dead echinacea heads, and two ladybirds were in them. It was instinctual, and I hadn’t meant to do it.
As you can see from this photo, we are digging over a large area of garden to make a huge flower bed with a pathway through it. It’s still so wet and boggy, it’s a bit of a slog! I say we, hubby has pulled his back fighting with a rotavator and there’s still more to do…oops!

Welcome March!
We’re now a week away from March, with seeds started and so much to look forward to, I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for some nice, fresh, sunny days where we can really get going in the garden.
